Daily Puzzle: Fairfax the Deckhand

Posted by kreai in

Name : Fairfax the Deckhand
Species : Pirate Tuskaninny
Hobbies : Not exactly sure, because he
tends to disappear for long stretches of
time without ever saying where he went
One Day Hopes To : Hit Grundo's Gym and get into shape
Quote : "Do you have any Flat-U-Less Tablets?
I think I've gotten another case of Bloaty Belly..."

"Arrg, where ye be going?" the Kiko First Mate asked.

"Heave to! I'm on me way into town," Fairfax replied gruffly, "I'll be back in plenty of time before we set sail... not that me whereabouts be any of yer business!" With that, he made his way down the gangplank and onto the pier.

Though Fairfax's nervous gait drew some attention from the other passers-by, he solemnly continued on his path. Leaving the docks and entering the market district, he swiftly made his way along side streets until reaching a manky tavern with a sign that read, "Hilbern's Grog Hall."

After being extra careful to make sure he wasn't followed, Fairfax checked the address with the one he'd scrawled on a napkin, then mumbled, "Well, this must be it." as he entered the Grog Hall...

..."Aye, I feel like I'm gonna explode!" Fairfax grumbled as he staggered out of the Grog Hall and back to to the harbour. With his face a sickening shade of pale green, it took everything he had keep from spewing the magnificent feast he'd just choked down. Luckily for him, the Neopian Pharmacy was just up the street. "Ahoy, maybe they've got something that can cure this Bloaty Belly of mine."

Unfortunately, the pharmacy was fresh out of Flat-U-Less Tablets. According to the shopkeeper, they'd just sold the last of them to a Lenny who'd accidentally eaten a Sausage Wrap that had gone bad while it sat around for a few days. Dismayed by his own lousy fortune, Fairfax continued to browse for something to soothe his aching tummy when he noticed how late he was. "Avast, I'd better hurry back, before they leave shore without me!"

Dashing out of the pharmacy, Fairfax scampered all the way back to the docks, barely making it up the gangplank as the ship began to drift away from the pier. "Aye, just in time, swabby... we almost left without ye!" the First Mate bellowed. As he stood there gasping for breath, Fairfax was suddenly overcome by queasiness. As the contents of that afternoon's eight-course meal began to overwhelm him, he covered his mouth and bolted for the privy.

"Arr! What seems to be Fairfax's problem?" one of the other deckhands asked.

"Aye," a wise old stripey whispered, "I be hearin' that he's gotten mixed up in the Food Club."

"Food Club?" the sprog asked incredulously.

"SHH!!!" the stripey exclaimed with an index finger to his lips. "Now remember, you didn't hear it from me...."

Daily Puzzle: Golden Butter Knife

Posted by kreai in

Neopedia : Golden Butter Knife

Category : Battle
Class : Magic
Suggested Value : 6,682,500 NPs
Rarity : Artifact
Weight : 1 pound

Although the golden butter knife can be used for fine dining, spreading fresh clam jam on crackers, or cutting a delicate slice of Faerie sparklecake; its most significant purpose is as a powerful Battledome weapon. What is this alleged secret power that the knife holds and how strong is REALLY strong? The only way to know for sure is to obtain this mighty instrument and test its strength yourself.

Valued at over 6.5 million Neopoints, this gleaming utensil makes a devastating and attractive addition to your personal Battledome armoury. Equip this seemingly innocent kitchen tool and be the bringer of beauty and doom all at once. Make silver butter knife-wielders quiver in terror at your flashing blade of power. Behold! The golden butter knife.

Though its origins cannot be certain, it is believed that the golden butter knife is a relic of a lost dynasty that once ruled the northern regions of Neopia, where the knife was recovered. Local rumours claim the knife once belonged to the noble family's prize golden dinnerware set, but as no other golden cutlery has been found, such rumours remain legend.

Daily Puzzle: Annual Gormball Championship

Posted by kreai in

Annual Gormball Championship

Each year, on the twenty-third day of the month of Gathering, Neopia's Gormball Championship is held. On that day, challengers come from far and wide for a chance to battle it out and determine who's the best in all the land. A survey of past championships proves that anything can (and likely will) happen once the tournament gets underway...

Year 2

Champion: Brian *Disqualified*
Runner-Up: Thyassa
Third Place: Ursula

This year's inaugral championship was a scandal-ridden affair, which concluded with Thyassa being declared the winner after Brian was disqualified for using a rigged ball. Despite his many protests to the contrary, the Scorchio's twitching eyebrows were a dead giveaway. Also of interest was a last-minute scratch by Dr. Sloth, who was sidelined by a mysterious prior commitment. Sloth's replacement, a Korbat named Kevin, was obviously outclassed, yet managed to show some promise for the future.

Year 3

Champion: Thyassa
Runner-Up: Farvin III
Third Place: Gargarox Isafuhlarg

After last year's controversial decision, Thyassa was under a great deal of pressure to prove that he was worthy of being regarded as a true champion. This year, though, all such questions were put to rest, as the sure-handed Chia put together a dominant performance and won a second straight title. A major surprise, though, was the strong showing by Farvin III, who used his ultra-powerful hearing ability to sense how close the ball was to popping. This extra-sensory advantage allowed the Alien Aisha to overcome his lack of familiarity with the game and make a strong showing, but in the end Thyassa's savvy and experience were simply too much
.

Year 4

Champion: Ursula
Runner-Up: Gargarox Isafuhlarg
Third Place: Ember

Given his strong showing last year, Farvin III was this year's odds-on favourite. However, many suspected foul-play, as a sudden ear infection waylaid the Alien Aisha's attempt to make a bid for the title. Luckily, those responsible for the deed were unable to capitalise on their trickery, as an Usul named Ursula rallied to pull through and get a much-deserved win. Known on the Gormball circuit as a tireless worker whose sense of fair play and dedication to the sport are unmatched, many of her fellow competitors were actually glad to see Ursula come away with the title, especially after she'd come so close two years earlier.

Year 5
Champion: Brian
Runner-Up: Farvin III
Third Place: Kevin

Ever since his disqualification at the first championship, Brian had hardly been able to make it out of the first round during subsequent tournaments -- all the attention about what sort of dirty tricks he might have up his sleeve had made him too nervous to concentrate. However, after his surprising win this year, observers of the sport fell into two camps: those who believed that he'd finally been able to play fair and win, and those who thought that he'd simply found a way to keep those twitching eyebrows of his under control.

Year 6
Champion: Thyassa
Runner-Up: Kevin
Third Place: Gargarox Isafuhlarg

Making good on the promise he began showing some years ago, Kevin has finally earned a place among the Gormball world's top players. After a surprising third-place finish last year, this Korbat Gormballer managed to come in second and prove that his success was no fluke.

The biggest story this year, though, wasn't Kevin, but rather the triumphant return of Thyassa. After winning the first two Gormball championships, this precocious Chia became increasingly frustrated with all the training that was necessary to stay on top. After taking a few years to pursue other interests, Thyassa came back this year with something to prove. Despite some signs of rust during the first few rounds, Thyassa managed a return to his winning ways, overcoming aggressive challenges from Kevin and Gargarox Isafuhlarg.

Year 7

Champion: Ember
Runner-Up: Farvin III
Third Place: Brian

In an unprecedented event, Ember blew away her competition, finally taking her place as a Gormball champion. Though Brian muttered about the possible use of faerie powers, most agreed he had no right to call anyone else a cheater and should be pleased that he placed third.

Farvin III earned Runner-Up for the third time, much to the alien Aisha's dismay. Rumour has it that, after his latest narrow loss, Farvin will be going into training for a solid year. Hopefully, this will give him the edge he needs to finally claim first place, a position that has long been just out of his reach.

Though most figured Thyassa would easily win this year, the Chia's game was a bit off due to a bad case of Sneezles. However, he promises to return next year and claim the title of champion for the fourth time.

Daily Puzzle: Jeran

Posted by kreai in

Name: Jeran
Pronunciation: (Jer-an)
Species: Lupe
Gender: Male
Colour: Blue
Age: 18
Interests: Chivalry, protecting Meridell, and doing great deeds.
Greatest Moment: Leading the knights of Meridell into an epic aerial battle against the forces of Lord Kass (even confronting the Eyrie himself).
Quote: "The world is full of danger... but there is always hope."
Related to: Lisha (his younger sister).

Many years ago, when Jeran was still a child, he was separated from his sister upon being teleported to Meridell while playing a game of hide-and-seek. The siblings were reunited years later, when Lisha and her friends were also mysteriously transported to Meridell.

During the war with Lord Kass and his forces, Jeran fought valiantly against the invading army of the Darigan Citadel. His leadership at this moment was crucial, since King Skarl was under the magical influence of the Court Dancer and unable to help. Thanks to Lisha's quick thinking, however, the Court Dancer's spell was broken, and Jeran regained the support of King Skarl. With the King's backing (and aid from some potions by Lisha's friend Kayla), Meridell was able to mount a counter-attack on the ground against the Darigan invaders. While Lord Kass was focused on the opposition's ground forces, Jeran led the knights of Meridell in an aerial assault that had both the Citadel and Lord Kass as its targets.

During the fierce battle among the clouds, Jeran rushed to aid Morris, another of Lisha's friends. Morris, a young Quiggle, had snuck into the battle in an attempt to lend Jeran a helping hand, but only wound up putting himself in harm's way. Though Jeran was able to save Morris from falling off the Citadel, the brave Lupe warrior himself was thrown over seconds later by Lord Kass. For a time, it was believed that the fall had led to Jeran's demise. Soon afterward, though, all of Meridell was relieved to learn that Psellia, the air faerie, had rescued Jeran by catching him as he fell.

Today Jeran lives happily in Meridell, enjoying the peaceful serenity that this land now offers, though he forever keeps a watchful eye.

Daily Puzzle's Story: The Meerca Brothers

Posted by kreai in

Names: Heermeedjet and Merouladen
Pronunciation: (her-mee-d'jit) and (mirol-adin)
Species: Meerca
Gender: Male
Colour: Brown
Ages: Heermeedjet is 24; Merouladen is 19
Interests: Treasure
Occupations: Thievery
Identifying Traits of Heermeedjet : Typically wears red,
and is never without his trusty goggles.
Identifying Traits of Merouladen: Generally wears a blue cap. He also considers himself the more handsome of the two.

The Meerca Brothers (as this notorious duo is known by most Neopians) have cut all ties with the despicable Malkus Vile and struck out on their own. No longer content to do the dirty work of others, they are now doing it just for themselves.

While many don't regard the Meerca Brothers as a serious threat (due to their rather unimpressive mental abilities), their blind recklessness has caused some Neopians to be concerned. With all the chaos and rebuilding that have taken place in the Lost Desert after Razul's attack, it's become a prime location for thieves and other less desirable types.

The palace repositories of both Sakhmet and Qasala are currently suffering from a shortage of trained guards, making them ideal targets. Prince Jazan isn't too concerned, however, since he has set many dangerous traps in his treasure hold. Any Neopian who would attempt to sneak in and steal his treasure would have to be totally insane or a complete fool...

Daily Puzzle: Dr. Chombasha's NeoPox cure

Posted by kreai in

You can read about it HERE.

Neopedia : Pacha the Veterinarian

Name : Pacha
Species : Prehistoric Elephante
Occupation : Veterinarian and Manager of the Tyrannian Petpets shop
Hopes to be : Tyrannia's foremost veterinarian
Quote : Nugga Ugga Ugg...
Translation: "Has that Donksaur had its walk yet?"

Having once been a sickly Tyrannian himself, Pacha the Elephante takes great pride in caring for the Petpets which are sold in his shop. As a top-notch veterinarian, Pacha's miraculous talent has enabled him to take a number of less fortunate Petpets and nurse them back to health. Once Pacha's Petpets have fully recovered, he then allows them to join a household where they will be loved and appreciated, just as they were during their stay in his shop.

A long, long time ago (further back then he would like to admit), Pacha was a young Tyrannian who, with plenty of food, friends and things to do, didn't have a care in the world. Pacha now delights in telling stories of what an exciting place Tyrannia was back in those early days. However one day, Pacha suddenly became sick with a prehistoric version of the NeoPox. Since there was no cure for NeoPox in Tyrannia at the time, Pacha was able to do little more than lay in bed and drink coconut juice. Wasting away in bed, Pacha would have been lost had it not been for the work of Dr. Chombasha, whose discovery of a cure to the Tyrannian strain of NeoPox helped save Pacha's life.

Having been rescued by Dr. Chombasha's NeoPox cure, Pacha promised to dedicate himself to helping sick and disabled Tyrannians. During his studies, however, Pacha realised that there were hardly any doctors who specialised in Petpets. And so, that's when he decided to focus his studies exclusively on the care and treatment of Petpets, which led to the work which Pacha does today at the Tyrannian Petpets Shop.

Daily Puzzle: Story Behind Gadgadsbogen

Posted by kreai in

All over Mystery Island natives and tourists join together to commemorate the annual festival of Gadgadsbogen. Literally translated to mean "good good day," Gadgadsbogen celebrates a phenomenon in which, each year during the month of Running, a number of new fruits mysteriously emerge from the soil to replace some of island's older fruits. During the festival, investors have been known to storm the shops of Mystery Island in hopes of buying the last of the fruits that have been discontinued.

In honour of this harvest of renewal, the citizens of Mystery Island take to the streets for the Gadgadsbogen festival. There are a slew of concerts and parades, many of which feature street performers, arts and crafts booths and costumed partygoers dressed as their favourite island treats. Until the arrival of the Gadgadsboden festival, nobody knows what shape or form this year's crop will take. The festival concludes when Cinto Pango, an elder from the Pango Tribe, emerges from his hut with a document proclaiming the names of the new fruits.

In spite of issues on Mystery Island such as the rising crime rate and the animosity between natives and tourists, during the festival such tensions are temporarily forgotten. If only for a few days, the spirit of Gadgadsbogen allows everyone on the island to come together in the spirit of the holiday.

Daily Puzzle: How Tavi Free Grey Faerie

Posted by kreai in ,

If you want to know the Story behind today's Daily Puzzle, here it is. It's from the Neopedia

The Grey Faerie

Thunderclouds loom over the top of the mountain, rain coming down like hammers and nails. Locked in her iron cage, she shivers while the shadows whisper their teasing taunts. The thunder rolls, and she looks up at the sky.

Just then, the shadows peel away, and a darker shadow appears. Her eyes mocking and triumphant, she stands over the cage. "No one is coming to rescue you," the shadow tells her. "You are trapped here forever, because I know the secret: a Faerie without wings is completely helpless!"

The Grey Faerie said nothing. She kept her eyes low and to the ground, so she would not have to look at her captor. The shadow laughed again and walked away. "A Faerie with clipped wings!" it said to its fellow shadows. "Lost all her powers, lost all her beauty..." the shadow paused for a moment, looking back at the cage. "Lost all hope."

The shadows disappeared, leaving her alone with the cold sunrise, but at sunset, they would be back, to taunt her further. She would cry, but her eyes had no more tears. There were no birds on this mountaintop, no friendly animals to hear her call for help.

The day crawled by, scorching sun burning down on her, without even a blanket to shade herself from the heat. The little water she got from the rain was already dried up. She tried to sleep, tried to escape to the realm of dreams, but the magical lock on her cage kept her from even that small comfort.

At around noon, she felt something move across her shoulder. She looked up. A shadow? She turned. Someone standing with the halo of the sun over their shoulder. "Who?" she whispered, her parched throat hurting from even a single word.

The figure stepped forward. A little Kyrii with walking shoes, a cap, and a travelling pack. "My name is Tavi," she said. "Who are you?"

"I -- I --" the Grey Faerie paused, her eyes gazing down at the lock on the door of her cage. "Please!" the Grey Faerie whispered. "Please! Help me!"

"How?"

The Grey Faerie pointed at the lock, afraid to touch the iron bars. "The lock. It has a name. If you whisper the name, it will open."

"The lock has a name?" Tavi said, putting down her pouch. "Do you know what the name is?"

The Grey Faerie nodded. "I do, but I cannot say it."

"Hm." Tavi looked at the lock. "What do you have to say for yourself?"

The lock chuckled. "You will never guess my name, little Kyrii, and I will never tell it, for I serve Jennumara, and her powers are greater than any in the world!"

"A Darkness Faerie!" Tavi whispered. She took a step back, but then saw the Grey Faerie's eyes widen, the hope there being devoured by fear. Right then and there, she knew she had to help the Faerie, no matter what the cost.

"I will play a game with you, little lock," she said, putting down her pack. "A game of guesses."

"What kind of game?" the lock asked, it's voice ringing with suspicion.

"We each get three questions, and after each question, I'll guess at your name, and you guess at what's in my pack. I cannot ask you your name, and you cannot ask what's in my pack." She gestured back at the pack. "I have three things in there. If you guess even one of them before I guess your name, I will join the Faerie in the cage; but, if I guess your name before that, you let the Faerie go free."

The lock laughed. "That's too easy!" it said. "You are obviously a mountain climber. I know what's in your pack."

"If it is so easy, why don't you agree to the terms of the game?"

The lock laughed again. "All right, foolish little Kyrii. I agree. Why, I'll even let you go first!"

"Very well," Kyrii said. "Here's my first question." She pointed at the Grey Faerie in the cage. "What's her name?"

The lock screamed out loud. "No! That's cheating!"

"Go on," Tavi smiled. She knew she had the lock beat, right there and then. "You have to tell me her name."

The lock grumbled. "Her name is Baelia," it said.

"Then, your name is Baelia, isn't it?" Tavi asked.

Again, the lock grumbled, then made a loud click. The door swung open and the Grey Faerie stumbled out of the cage.

"Thank you!" she said, hugging Tavi tightly. "But, how did you know?"

"When I asked your name, you did not answer, but looked at the lock. When you said the lock had a name, I knew the spell must have used your own name to keep you inside."

"You are wise," the lock said. "But not wise enough! My lady of shadow will find you, Faerie, and when she does, she'll trap you as she did before."

Tavi looked at the Grey Faerie. "Is it right?"

The Grey Faerie nodded. "Yes. I am powerless without wings. In order to get new wings, I must get a new name."

Tavi put her pack back on her shoulder. "All right, then, we have to get you a new name!" She started to walk away, then stopped, turned and looked at the Grey Faerie. "Exactly how do we do that?"
